Melinda Ann Alford
Head of Tech and Innovative Learning
I’ve spent over 20 years in international education, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that schools are about so much more than academics. Sure, test scores and accreditation are important (and I’ve led my fair share of WASC and IB initiatives), but what really drives me is helping students grow into curious, compassionate, and confident individuals. I love nothing more than mentoring teachers, collaborating with parents and building school culture.
I’ve always believed that education is about shaping lives, not just meeting standards. I began my career as an inner city teacher in North Carolina and we were literally tasked with saving lives. My schools may not have metal detectors anymore but I carry that mentality with me as I lead teachers.
What makes me tick isn’t just the big leadership stuff-it’s the relationships. I love the unpredictability of middle schoolers, the creative ideas that come out of a great teacher brainstorming session, and the trust that builds when parents know you’re on their team. I've never asked a teacher to do anything I wouldn't. And in the over 100 modules of professional development I can lead, there isn't a single one that doesn't feature immediately classroom-usable takeaways.
I come from a multi-generational teaching tradition of strong female leaders. Even with all this, my mother begged me not to go into education. She didn't want me to be poor. I became a world-class engineer at her urging but....just when I thought I was out...education pulled me back in. You see...more than travel or a paycheck..it is the sense of purpose that drives me and nothing compares in the world to building young lives. This isn't a job-it’s my calling. Forever. Schools where I work are places where kids feel seen, valued, and inspired to reach their potential. I ensure student feels like they belong and every teacher feels empowered to innovate and grow. My husband, an experienced Special Education Manager, and I share this passion, and we love being part of school communities where we can both contribute. Education is hard work, but it’s the most rewarding work I can imagine, and I'll do it for the rest of my life.
My last 12 plus years have been in senior leadership roles with schools across Asia. I've successfully built a school library and led the upgrade to a 21st century learning space. I've worked on WASC accreditation visits to schools and successfully led my own school through the process multiple times. I've been a K-12 Principal, an International Principal and a Director of Teaching and Learning. As I move towards finishing my doctorate in leadership with an AI focus this year, I turn my attention to making our children "future ready" by being on the forefront of educational technology as a Director of Innovation.
